[2008 Tours]

The 2008 Board began the year with a dinner (what else?) Hosted by the Harcourts in their great home. The 2008 President, Dave and Nancy Rosenberg were not able to be in attendance. The 2008 Model A Season, the second as a club, was filled with many tours, events, and a MUCH upgraded swap meet. This was the first year it was called the Rocky Top Show and Swap.

Windmill Farm in Colo Spr Our touring season began with a joint tour with the Pikes Peak Club to the Windmill farm in the Springs After touring the windmills we adjourned to the Manleys for a potluck lunch. Bob showed us his great big antique steam tractor.

Annual April Fools Tour Jerry and Marie Robinette annually conduct the April Fools Tour. The tour starts at the Conoco in Franktown (where else?) and proceeds per instructions. This year we had a scavenger hunt. Teams scattered throughout Castle Rock to find silly stuff on Marie and Jerry’s list. After a specified time we assembled at a Mexican Restaurant in Castle Rock to have lunch and show what we had collected.

A rousing time was had, with Denny Folchert showing his RED toilet seat and Wayne Russert attempting to get clarification of one of the “Questionable” collected items. Dave Rosenberg claimed “Presidents” privilege as he displayed various questionable items. The most questionable of all was the “thong” that he claimed met the lists criteria.

The 2nd Annual Rocky Top Show and Swap Our annual fund raiser pancake breakfast was combined with a “Classic” car show and Swap Meet. This was the first year that we held the event at Casey Jones Park in Elizabeth. The club was joined by the Elizabeth High School Technology Club, who provided much help. The donations at the “Rocky Top” benefited both clubs. The Technology Club uses these donations to go to Regional and National meets for competitions

The “Rocky Top” is a FREE car show with no admission. Our pancake breakfast provides the club with its yearly operating funds. In the photo at left, President Dave is explaining the money details, while Marie is just waiting to grab the bucks!

Denny Folchert is the Chief Cook. Denny works hard and long with many hours put in organizing the food. Denny in the photo at the left (in the center of the picture) could not keep the coffee pots full. It seemed that they were always empty! Of course we had many great Model A’s at the show.

MAFCA/MARC Dallas National Convention Several of our members went to Dallas for the MAFCA/MARC national convention. At the left is the Model A’s on the Dallas Speedway. Jerry and Marie Robinette took a 160 MPH spin in a race car on this course.

Donkey Derby Days Those of us who could not go to Dallas went to Donkey Derby Days in Cripple Creek Colorado.

There were many things to do. A sand carving competition, the annual donkey races, and of course a Parade including the A’s. At the left is Len and Mary Harcourt’s Fordor all shined up and ready to go.

After the festivities, some of us toured an operating Gold Mine, which had this old shack and a mine shaft that you could tour. This old shack is part of an old mine from the 1880s and is located near Victor, CO.

The Chatfield Balloon Fest A fun local tour had us rising at 5 AM for a tour to Chatfield Lake and a Balloon Fest.

This was a very COLORFUL photo opportunity. About 30 hot air balloons were launched.

Next year we plan to go to the Colorado Springs Balloon Festival where they launch over a lake!

At the left, Bev Wiedeman, Andy, and Jerry Robinette had fun. Is that fire coming out of Andy’s head? Marie Robinette and Nancy Rosenberg , seem concerned about balloon collisions.

Estes National Park and the Scottish/Irish Festival We toured to Estes National Park in September and stayed at the YMCA Conference center. The highlights of the tour was the 32nd Irish Scottish Festival held annually and a couple of Model A’s went to the highest pass in the USA called Trail Ridge Road.  We also toured the park, and had a great time of fellowship.

The Irish/Scottish Festival featured Parades, Music, Highland Dancing, and Jousting. Competitors, dressed in full armor, attempted to unseat their opponents in games recreated as they were in 1100 AD.

Thanks to Marie Robinette, we were upgraded to a fabulous private lodge for the week. Brand new, the lodge had every thing we needed.

Jerry Robinette, and Len Harcourt braved the road called “Trail Ridge Road” This is the highest pass in the USA at over 12,000 feet. At the left, Jerry and Len’s Model A’s were stared at by modern car drivers who wondered how they got up there. Jerry had to work on the brakes going down! Good thing he had some extra hydraulic fluid for his “juice brakes”
