HOW TO PROCESS PHOTOS and UPLOAD your PHOTOS for Input to the PHOTO ALBUM or the NEWSLETTER

NOTE: You cannot upload your photos directly to the website. You must send them by E-mail to the Webmaster (Andy Wiedeman) Please send photos to webmaster@rockymountainmodelaclub.org or editor@rockymountainmodelaclub.org

IMPORTANT: The webmaster only has a dialup connection to the Internet (due to my remote rural location) THEREFORE if you are NOT going to compress the photos as discussed below SEND ME THE PHOTOS attached to an E-mail with ONLY 1 PHOTO PER E-MAIL. As an example: If you have a camera with a resolution of 3.5 Megapixels and attach 4 to 6 photos to an E-mail then send it to me (for those of you with High Speed Internet it will upload in about 4 seconds), however, it will take me about an hour or more to download your E-mail message!!! If I see a large E-mail such as this I usally will not download the E-mail but instead delete it.

HOW TO PROCESS or REDUCE the pixels in a photo.

Photos taken with modern digital cameras have lots of “pixels” While this is great for resolution when printing the photos taken on a digital camera, they take a lot of time to download and print to the screen on a computer when retrieving the photo from the website. Indeed, the maximum resolution is NOT necessary for displaying on the web. Any thing better than 72 dots per inch cannot be resolved by the human eye on the computer screen. The following hints are provided to provide all of the members a good web experience, and to avoid long download times, especially for those of us who only have dial-up Internet access.

Send ALL PHOTOS in the camera standard JPG format. There are other formats for photos but the standard is a JPG . The web authoring software I use reads and will allow most browsers to display a JPG faithfully.  Therefore, save all photos as <filename>.JPG   Be sure and choose a descriptive name for the file, so that I can be sure and put it where it belongs in the newsletter.

DO NOT SEND PHOTOS with filenames like ...  0013.JPG
DO SEND PHOTOS with filenames like ...    Freds Model A at the Club Picnic.JPG

FILE SIZE IS IMPORTANT! Please Read Below

If the Photos are ONLY going to be USED in the NEWSLETTER  - Select a lower resolution format when you are taking the photo, most cameras will let you select a resolution of 640 x 480 (this is about 300,000 pixels or 0.3Mpixels) Compared to a maximum resolution of 3.5 Mpixels this will reduce the download time by a factor of 10 !!!

If you forget to lower the resolution when taking the photo, most cameras or the downloading software in your home computer (usually your camera software) will allow you to save the photo in a lower resolution format. You can save us all a lot of time if you will reduce the resolution to a lower value BEFORE SENDING THE PHOTO to the newsletter editor. Check your camera and home computer software for instructions.

If you cannot seem to manage this SEND THE PHOTOS TO ANDY OR BEV WIEDEMAN anyway. For more information on uploading photos PLEASE contact Andy for information!
